The Bills are 4-0 for the first time since 1992. Can you say Superbowl? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Taken at one of the few parks in my area with a stream, but no fence to keep pinhole photographers out. It's from one of the few rolls of film I shot this summer, between strange weather patterns (every day it rains really hard for 5 minutes, 10 times a day. Or it just rains all day long), shows, parties, cookouts, festivals, working on the Phoenix mission to Mars, and doing chores around the house. Just kidding about the chores.

I've been having a lot of trouble sending replies to many of you who are kind enough to stop by and leave a comment. My reply messages keep getting rejected as spam. So, if you don't get a reply from me, it's not because I'm not speaking to you--it's because my messages are apparently indistinguishable from spam, despite the fact that I never even mention Viagra. Well, not more than 10 or 20 times in a message, anyway. I apologize for the unintentional silence; I do very much appreciate your comments and the time taken to stop by and look.

My friend, photographer and provocateur, Erinn Cunningham, from Urban Nation gave me a shooting assignment: 'detritus'. The pictures I took are all pinhole pictures incorporating objects given to me or left behind by my ex lovers. I worked on the pictures over the summer, but got distracted. So the project didn't really end, we just went in different directions. But we're still friends.

The negative for this picture got accidentally solarized. That's why there are black outlines around the solarized areas instead of the white outlines that come up on a solarized print.

I made many versions of each picture; here's another one taken with a different camera.

All summer I listened to the old and brilliant Joni Mitchell album (I still call them albums), Hejira. It's about journeys, wanderlust, the temporary but sometimes beautiful connections with fellow travelers one makes along the way. And it's about almosts - almost falling in love, almost staying but deciding to go, almost flying but being swallowed by the sun. Even though they're almosts, they still count, and sometimes they touch us and make us more beautiful inside than actually getting there... wherever there is.

On the other hand, listening to 'Cherry Pie' in the car with the sunroof open and the volume cranked, on my way somewhere, cures all that soulfulness in about 20 seconds. Rock on.

Film Photographers of Greater Buffalo have a group show at this year's Infringement Festival in Buffalo. Opening party is tonight 6-9 p.m at El Museo on Allen Street. It's not too late to change your plans and rush into town. There will be snacks, alcohol and some really beautiful traditionally printed black and white prints from local photographers.

Today's picture makes the leap from lensless photography to no camera at all. This is 30 x 32 inch photogram. It's not in the show, since it's not a photograph, but it's an example of some new work I've been toying with.

Human skin is a photosensitive material, so the next time you've been in the sun in funny socks or sandles or sunglasses, you can tell people 'That's not a tan line, it's a photogram.'

I'm breaking with custom today and going all wordy. I promise this won't happen again soon. Today's picture was caused by my photographer friend Erinn at Urban Nation. Erinn set me to work on a project with a theme he picked, possibly to keep me out of trouble. The project isn't done and I might be away for a while to work on it, as it's a little elaborate. And fun.

While you're surfing blogs: If you haven't seen Bill Vaccaro's work over at Out of Contxt, hustle over there and enjoy the view. Bill is an excellent, award winning photographer (and a Buffalo ex-pat) and you will like his work, I guarantee it.

While I was visiting Bill's blog and basking in the photographic goodness, I noticed a link to a podcast interview of Bill by photographer Paul Giguere,. That led to a sudden, total immersion in the world of podcasts. I listened to all of Thoughts on Photography, and then moved on to iTunes for more free podcast crack.

And that led me to iTunes U, which is the greatest thing since rollfilm. I went straight for Saturday Morning Physics, from the U of Michigan. This stuff is great. They have string theory. They have cosmic rays. And they have three podcasts just on the physics of photography! The first one is 'How to Keep Your Focus; The Physics of Camera Lenses'. Which starts out with a very cool demonstration of... a pinhole camera.
